WHO-One million sexual infections recorded everyday

The world has failed to combat sexually transmitted bacterial infections in the past few years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said today in a study that estimates one million new cases every day. The annual total of 376 million infections with chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and syphilis is based on data from 2016. It is about five per cent higher than the UN health agency’s previous global estimate from 2012. “We consider this a hidden epidemic, a silent epidemic, a dangerous epidemic that is persistent globally,’’ WHO epidemiologist Melanie Taylor told a news conference in Geneva. These four diseases can be cured, but if they are left untreated, patients can develop neurological and cardiovascular problems as well as infertility. In addition, pregnant women who get infected are at risk of stillbirth. “Since most people do not develop symptoms, infections often go unnoticed, allowing them to spread further,’’ Taylor said. The WHO recommended the use of condoms, sex education, and improved disease screening in developing countries as ways to fight these four diseases. The report did not cover the sexually transmitted viruses HIV, hepatitis B, herpes and human papillomavirus.

Neymar ruled out of Copa America with ankle injury

Brazil’s 2-0 friendly win over Asian champions Qatar in Brasilia yesterday came at a heavy cost after they lost striker Neymar for this month’s Copa America. The former FC Barcelona forward is going to miss the tournament because of an ankle ligament injury. Neymar limped off in the 17th minute after he appeared to twist his right ankle and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) later confirmed he would miss the tournament. “Neymar was evaluated and underwent scans that confirmed a ligament rupture in the ankle,”CBF said in a statement. “Due to the seriousness of the injury, Neymar will not recover in time to participate in Copa America in Brazil.” The CBF said they would meet on Thursday to pick a replacement for Neymar in the squad for the tournament, which kicks off on June 14. The injury capped a horrible few days for Paris St-Germain (PSG) striker, who was stripped of the Brazil captaincy last month. Also, he was last weekend accused of rape in a case that has dominated the headlines in his homeland. Brazil were already leading 1-0 courtesy of Richarlison’s 16th minute header when Neymar departed and Gabriel Jesus added the second eight minutes later from close range. The five-times world champions were rarely troubled by a limited Qatar side, who missed a VAR-assisted penalty kick in injury time. “We won and the feeling is that we won well,”said man of the match Philippe Coutinho. “We pressured them and we did what we wanted to do.” Once again, though, all attention was focused on Neymar, the world’s most expensive player and a polarising figure in the football world. Neymar has suffered several serious injuries dating back to 2014. That was when a brutal knee in the back from Colombian Juan Camilo Zuniga kept him out of Brazil’s FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat by Germany. He injured a metatarsal in his right foot which sidelined him in the months leading up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. An injury to the same foot in January forced him to miss the business end of this season with PSG. The country’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, who is a football fan, had attended the game. He was pictured with a smiling Neymar as the player received treatment at the hospital after the match on Wednesday. The President’s good wishes for a speedy recovery were to no avail, though. This is because Brazil will face Bolivia in their Copa America opener on June 14 in Sao Paulo without their best player.

Developing mental health through secure attachment

Since 1949, Mental Health America has led the observance of May as Mental Health Month. But what does the term “mental health” really mean? When you boil it down, mental health is the ability to adequately adapt to the demands of life as we travel in and out of the various roles we play every day. This means feeling comfortable with oneself and in positive connection with others, having the flexibility to think outside the box, being patient, feeling emotions, and repairing and moving beyond conflict. In many ways, mental health is about resilience. So how do we encourage psychological resilience? Attachment theory, coined by psychologist John Bowlby, asserts that the ability for an individual to form an emotional and physical “attachment” to another person gives a sense of stability and security necessary to take risks, branch out, and grow and develop a personality. Building on this work, Daniel Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA’s School of Medicine, identified five key processes that parents can practice to help children develop psychological resilience and positive emotional well-being, leading to psychological and emotional health in adulthood: Contingent collaborative communication is when a parent responds to an infant’s verbal and non-verbal cues in a timely and effective manner, allowing the infant to develop a sense that the world is a safe place and her/his needs will be met. According to Siegel, “when there is contingent collaborative communication, the brain functions optimally both within itself and within present and future relationships.” Reflective dialogue is the practice of a parent talking to a child about thoughts, feelings, perceptions, memories, sensations, attitudes, beliefs, and intentions. Siegel asserts that these eight elements help kids develop compassion and “mindsight” — a term coined by Siegel to describe the human capacity to perceive the mind of the self and others: “[Mindsight] is a powerful lens through which we can understand our inner lives with more clarity, integrate the brain, and enhance our relationships with others. Mindsight is a kind of focused attention that allows us to see the internal workings of our own minds. It helps us get ourselves off of the autopilot of ingrained behaviors and habitual responses. It lets us ‘name and tame’ the emotions we are experiencing, rather than being overwhelmed by them.” Siegel suggests putting the above-mentioned eight elements on a list to remember to intentionally discuss each of them with your child. Conflict repair and reconnection is the means to resolve conflicts that are based upon missed connections. Conflict is a natural and important part of being in relationship with others and is inherently neither good nor bad. What makes conflict healthy or unhealthy is whether genuine, caring efforts to repair the conflict are exhibited. When parents model appropriate conflict repair and reconnection, kids learn how to regulate their nervous systems when conflict arises. Take this instance: A child is playing and exclaims, “Mommy, I am so excited about my new toy!” Mommy, who is engrossed in a new book, says “that’s great” without looking up, making eye contact, or seeming to care at all about the child’s excitement. The child walks away with her head down, feeling bad and shameful that she was not paid attention to. Suddenly, mom realizes that this was a missed connection. She jumps up, goes to her child, makes eye contact, and says, “I am really sorry I did not pay attention to you. I am available now.” This is a solid demonstration of conflict repair and reconnection that the child will remember and assimilate into her own future actions. Coherent narrative refers to how clearly, logically, and with what appropriate emotional distance a parent tells the story of their life to their child. Attachment research has determined that the most powerful predictor of a child’s attachment to a parent is the coherence of that parent’s autobiographical story – the more coherent the narrative, the more chance of secure attachment. Emotional communication is the sharing and amplifying of positive emotional states in a child (i.e., joy, excitement) and the sharing and soothing of negative emotional states (i.e., fear, anxiety). A parent’s ability to tolerate and even embrace these emotions, then help their child regulate her/his emotional state, is critical to secure attachment and mental health. According to Siegel: “It’s important that parents really take joy in their children and to have a lot of fun with them; to really just be amazed at the miracle of life and the fact that we’re alive and can connect with each other. It’s an incredible opportunity for joining and that joy that can come from that kind of connection is something parents should share with their children. It is important that parents not just solve problems when it comes to a child’s negative emotions, but that they share the negative emotional state with the child. The parent needs to learn to tolerate the child’s negative emotional state, not just sweep it under the rug. By tolerating these negative emotions the parent teaches the child that negative emotions can help us learn about ourselves. Ultimately, we can learn to soothe ourselves not by running away from those states, but actually by going toward them and then helping ourselves feel calmed and soothed.” If you are a parent or parent-to-be, it is critical to pay attention to how you do or will demonstrate secure attachment and resilience with your children through role modeling and interaction. It’s never too late to improve your mental health.

How To Solve Lagos Traffic-Alibaba

Popular comedian, Alibaba, has just come up with his own idea on how the traffic jinx in Lagos can be broken. After he reportedly spent 3 hour in traffic yesterday, Alibaba believes Lagos residents are the cause of the problems and then proffers a solution. Read details: Spent 3 hours today… and came to the conclusion again, that we are the cause of our problems. After the #tdwcafrica2019 at Landmark, I was on the road linking Ligali, going back to my office and noticed there was a gridlock. My driver said it will soon clear. When soon turned to 35 minutes, I came down and walked through the vehicles to see the cause of the HOLD UP was. 4 lanes coming from Ligali towards Landmark and 5 lanes filtering onto the end of Ligali. Plus traffic from 3 streets pouring into the same road. The little spaces inbetween cars were all taken over by okada riders. While the spaces wider than those okadas could squeeze through had been pegged close by keke Napep. Managed to merge 4 lanes to 2 and 3 lanes in the opposite direction, to form 1 lane, just to decongest the gridlock. Worked. And after 2 hours, decorum had resumed. Hmmm. A thought hit me. If @jidesanwoolu wants to make extra N200b to develop Lagos, he should just invest in CCTVs at major and busy junctions. With STOP signs to boot. Borrow money fix the roads and drainages. Then set up a system that will get drivers and vehicles to be linked together. When you are caught on tape, beating the traffic lights or breaking traffic laws, you will just get the alert that the payment has been deducted from your account. To make this work, each car will have its registration number linked to the BVN of the owner. No need to set up any other means of collecting the money. And if you sell the car, you must go to the licensing office to change the BVN. Failure to do that means whoever drives the car and commits an offence, will not be debited. The original owner pays. If it’s a military vehicle, the debit comes from the military account. Same with corporate bodies. Individuals too. You can imagine Oga is sitting at home, in Ikoyi, and he gets a debit alert for traffic infractions in Lekki PHASE 1, N45,000. How? He will call the driver or whoever is with the car. Kilode? “I beat red lights sir”. Just sack yourself. And it doesn’t matter whether you have money in the account. The account will be on debit. Any day money comes in it will be deducted with interest. No traffic
